Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their partners, whether they are legally married to their partners, living in a common-law relationship, or have a conjugal relationship. A couple must have been in a common-law and conjugal relationship for at least one year before a sponsorship can be started. However, a sponsorship based on marriage can be started right after the marriage. See General Sponsorship Information
