The Canadian government has reduced the Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF). One of the changes announced with the Conservative government budget on May 2 was that the fee would be reduced from $975.00 to $490.00 per adult. This is a welcome development.

The RPRF is collected from immigrants after they have been approved for permanent residence. This means it is collected shortly before they migrate to Canada. In turn, this means that a family with two adults was required to pay $1950.00 to Canada immigration just before they travelled to Canada, sent their personal effects, started their search for jobs and housing, and then settled in their new country.  Obviously, this is a poor time to add a significant expense to a family’s budget.

The reduction means that a family with two adults will now be required to part with $980.00 just before they migrate. It is still too much money at the wrong time, but it is an improvement.
