Loss of Permanent Residence Status

- Criminal Conviction -

A permanent resident can lose his or her status and be deported if he or she is convicted of a crime (or more than one crime). The immigration authorities have some discretion not to take away permanent residence but their decision is influenced by the seriousness of the immigrant's criminal record.

In such cases, the immigrant is entitled to a hearing and (in most cases) an appeal.
