Business Class Applications

Canada encourages immigration by those who are able to make a significant economic contribution to our economy.

There are three categories of business immigrants:

  • Investors;

  • Entrepreneurs; and

  • Self-employed.

If a business class applicant meets the criteria in their category they will also be assessed against specific criteria and credited with points for different aspects of their resume. This points system is almost the same as that for skilled workers, but the pass score is much lower, at 35 points.

Investors

Investors must

  • have a legally obtained net worth of at least $800,000.00 CAD;

  • have experience managing a percentage of the equity of a qualifying business for two of the last five years;

  • have managed at least five employees (or the equivalent of part time employees) for each year that they managed a business; and

  • invest $400,000.00 CAD in a Canadian investment fund. This money is repaid to the investor after approximately five years, but without interest. In many instances arrangements can be made with a financial institution so that the investor instead pays $120,000.00 to $130,000.00 (approximately the equivalent of borrowing $400,000.00 for five years) which is not refunded.

Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurs must

  • have a legally obtained net worth of at least $300,000.00 CAD;

  • have managed and controlled a percentage of the equity of a qualifying business for at least two of the past five years;

  • intend to and be able to manage and control a percentage of a qualifying Canadian business; and

  • create at least one full time job (or part time equivalents) for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is not a family member

Self-employed

Self employer persons fall into two general categories. They will have to commit to making a contribution to Canada in their category.

First, self-employed persons include those who have participation at a world class level in

  • Cultural activities; or

  • Athletics.

These immigrants will have the intention and the ability to be self-employed in Canada and t make significant contributions to Canada’s cultural activities or athletics.

Second, farmers may also qualify as self-employed persons. Farmers are expected to purchase and manage a farm.
